Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. VEI 3 produced mudflows which reached the town of Armero and killed more than 23,000 people. At the time of publication, it represented the best available science. Eruptive activity at Nevado del Ruiz may have occurred in 1994, but this is not confirmed.

A relatively small eruption in 1985 caused a devastating mud flow that killed almost 25,000 people in the town of Armero, marking one of the worst volcanic disasters in history. A well-defined lava flow is visible at image lower right. Could more have been done to save the people/ property? Nevado Del Ruiz has an overall andesitic and dacitic structure that made of layers (strata) of hardened lava, volcanic ash and tephra. As hot lava flowing on the undersides of the volcanic crater it causes a quick melting of snow and ice, which generates a very large floods that sweeping nearby valleys.

Nevado del Ruiz volcano in central Colombia, 130 km WNW of Bogota, is a broad, glacier covered volcano.

Nevado del Ruiz is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.
It is affected by several factors, namely, the composition of the magma core, the temperature, and the amount of dissolved gases it contains.
The Colombian volcano Nevado del Ruiz is an active stratovolcano with a history of generating deadly volcanic mudflows (lahars) from relatively small-volume eruptions.

Marian Wright Edelman, An Overview of The Movie Volcano,

Committed many quiet starts when a major eruption, because of reassuring messages that were sent by each of: 1 - The mayor on the radio. Most of the fatalities occurred in the town of Armero which was completely inundated by lahars. More than 23,000 people were killed in Armero when lahars (volcanic debris flows) swept down from the erupting Nevado del Ruiz volcano. This photograph shows the volcano in the early stages of the 1985 eruption. In 15ummit eruptions melted snow and ice and produced mudflows that traveled tens of miles from the volcano. As it has been shown through the Nevado del Ruiz volcano warning systems are not sufficient. It is affected by several factors, namely, the composition of the magma core, the temperature, and the amount of dissolved gases it contains.
